Whirlpool headquartered in Benton Harbor just laid off an undisclosed number of employees nationwide due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Employing approximately 3,500 and 4,000 employees work in Benton Harbor, it’s unsure just how many Whirlpool employees received the news. A company spokesman would not say how many across the country will be affected, but did say some of the layoffs were made in Benton Harbor.
Whirlpool claim the layoffs are due to a global recession, in part because of the coronavirus.
It was mentioned in a statement that they want to try to minimize the impact on their people. Cost reduction to date have included a voluntary retirement program, reduced budgets, furloughs, restricted travel, along with other internal steps.
Whirlpool hopes in time to be able to bring these jobs back and remains confident the company will remain strong.
