Here’s How to Find Qualified Service Techs

Most business have been struggling to find workers and the appliance repair business is no different.  If you’re in need of qualified service techs have you tapped into your local vocational school?

There are around 6,500 vocational schools located across the country. If you don’t know any in your area do a quick Google to search for the nearest one.

We recommend calling a local vocational school or Google the name of a counselor who handles placement. LinkedIn is another good place to search for them.

Set up a video call with the job placement staff. If school is close by, drop off bagels one morning to grab their attention. Offer to set up general Q&A session for graduating students.

Another great idea is to set up internship/mentor program.  This would allow select students to team up with one of your service techs and it allows them to spend a day or two in the field.  Shadowing on a ride along is a fantastic way for a student to learn from a seasoned repair professional. It’s  also a great way for your service tech to observe them as a potential employee.

If you can afford to invest a little, establish a scholarship program for promising students in financial need. Offer $500 to $1,000 and include specific criteria for the award. A scholarship program demonstrates a strong commitment to your local vocational school and the community where you serve and live. It builds and fosters a relationship with the placement counselor who ultimately has the recommendation power of forwarding the best students to key employers and puts you top of mind.

This is a perfect opportunity to issue a press release in your local newspaper and business journal explaining your alliance with the vocational school community. At the end of the day it could help you recruit qualified service techs and drive new customers too.
